Plants vs. Zombies!!

This Plant vs. Zombies cake was my introduction to the super popular game. I don't really pay attention to what's trending since my life revolves around my daughter (to an unhealthy point but whatever) so my brothers make fun of me for barely catching on to this phenomena.

Anyway, this cake is a single tier with four layers of marble cake with vanilla cream mousse as the filling. It is covered in white chocolate ganache that is tinted green and the checker board design is made f a darker green marshmallow fondant. The characters are all made of gumpaste (I have never made so many gumpaste figures for one cake) and everything on the cake is completely edible, except for the happy birthday sign which is made of paper. The cake is a 7 inch round and has 12 servings.

Peony Lace Cake

So it's over a month since my last post. Sorry! I've been busy with cakes, event certification and crazy baby time!

Here's a cute cake I did in late August/early September for a client's birthday!! It's a two tiered vanilla cake layered and covered in milk chocolate ganache with a layer of grey marshmallow fondant icing. There are white modeling chocolate lace appliques, a white gumpaste bow and a white peony dusted with pink lustre dust. This cake was 16 servings.

Now for the back story...this is the first time i ever tried working with a peony design!! I figured I'd give it a go since it's such a huge trend right now. So I bought the cutter set (this particular flower has a very different type of petal) and had a go at it.

My first attempt looked like a rose. I had made the bud too small!!! So the night before I decided to re-do the whole thing using RKT for the bud base and this actually worked out MUCH better. I had a beautiful huge bloom that I planned on putting to the left between the two tiers.

Now with these flowers, each petal has its own wire that holds its petal in place. So at the end, you get a nice solid bouquet of wire to stick right into the cake and give you some stability. You make a giant whole in the cake but your flower is sitting right on top of it. I insert my flower and it looks ridiculous. It's BIGGER than the top tier of the cake!!! It's a few hours before the client is scheduled to pick up the cake so I cant re-do the flower at this point! It would never dry on time. So I started breaking off all petals until I was left with just the bud.

I thought this was the end of my issues but that's never how things turn out in the cake world (or in any world actually) so I put the flower in to the side how I had planned and it just looked weird. This flower had to be facing front but with doing so I would expose the wire and the gaping hole!

I tried not to panic and decided to make a gumpaste bow and roll it out SUPER thin and just pray that it would dry on time. Prayers were answered and it came together quite nicely and just in time for pick up!!
